How identities change shots, passes, tackles, and why Gold is not just a paint job.

PlayStyles Guide

PlayStyles are the reason the Limited Beta exists. Ratings still matter, but a 110 OVR striker without Finesse Expert does not bend the same ball as a slightly cheaper card that has Gold Finesse. This guide is the identity textbook. Rankings live on the PlayStyles tier list. How you actually tap the shot is on controls.

EA launched 18 PlayStyles with Silver (level 1) and Gold (level 2) during The World’s Game update, then added four more for this Limited Beta: Incisive Through Pass, Dead Ball, Driven Lob Through, and Slide Tackle. Creators testing later builds also talk about assigning extra styles to a card. Treat assignment rules as “what this build allowed,” not as a promise for the live patch.

How to read Silver versus Gold

Silver is a noticeable bump: faster animation, more curve, cleaner trap. Gold adds the extra sentence in EA’s deep dive — unique trajectories, stumble chance on tackles, dinked passes on Tiki Taka, a red penalty dot, and so on. If two cards share a PlayStyle and you can only start one, the Gold version is the real identity. Silver is still worth a bench slot in Gauntlet when appearances run out.

Finishing

Finesse Expert — extra speed, curve, and accuracy on finesse shots. Gold also pumps regular mid-to-close shots. This is the “cut inside and wrap it” winger style.

Clinical Finisher — placed regular shots from mid/close. Less highlight-reel, more tap-ins that stop bouncing off the keeper.

Power Shot — accuracy and speed on power shots. Gold lowers the elevation and speeds the kick, so the ball stays on frame instead of becoming a row-Z meme.

Penalty Expert — faster, more accurate penalties. Gold shows a red target dot after the swipe. If you practice in skill games, this is the only style that changes the UI.

Chip Shot — dipping chips. Gold dips harder. Use it when the keeper is charging; ignore it against Rush Out goalkeepers until you learn the timing on controls.

Passing

Tiki Taka — laser ground passes. Gold includes dinked passes. Pair it with short Game Plans (4-1-4-1 / 4-4-2) rather than hopeful long balls.

Bullet Pass — driven ground passes that stay trappable. This is the switch-of-play style, not the through-ball style.

Whipped Cross — faster, curvier crosses. Gold is the difference between a headed chance and a goal kick.

Incisive Through Pass (new) — through balls pick a better target and lead the runner more. This is the CAM identity people install the beta to feel.

Driven Lob Through (new) — lobbed through balls with better curve, control, and lead. Over a high line this is the anti-trap tool. Combine with Rapid runners.

Ball control and physical

Rapid — sprint-dribble acceleration. Gold also helps knock-ons. Put it on the winger you actually sprint with, not the false nine who receives with their back to goal.

Trickster — faster skill moves with a glued ball. If you never skill, skip it. If you do, Gold Trickster is the 1v1 card.

Accelerator — acceleration without the ball. Overlaps, recovering CBs, late box crashes.

Relentless — less fatigue. Gold recovers more at half-time. Quietly huge in Gauntlet when House Rules force extra time or high press.

Bruiser — strength in jostles and shielding. Box-to-box and target forwards.

Precision Header — faster, more accurate headers (shots, passes, clearances). Pair with Whipped Cross on the opposite flank.

Defending and goalkeeping

Anticipate — standing tackles with more range and the ball stuck to their feet. Gold can trip the attacker. This is the “I did not even slide” CB.

Guardian — the same idea for hard tackles. Different button, different foul risk. Read controls before you spam it.

Slide Tackle (new) — longer slide radius and snappier animations. EA also listed slide-tackle range as a general gameplay tweak. Together they make last-ditch slides more tempting and more punishable if you miss. Practice in PvE first.

Deflector — GK punches/deflections go safer and faster. Cuts tap-in rebounds.

Rush Out — faster GK rushes. Gold adds better auto-tackle on the charge. Dangerous against Chip Shot.

Dead Ball (new) — free kicks with more curl, pace, dip, and control to beat a wall. If you take every set piece with the same 80 FK rating card, swap to the Dead Ball specialist in your Game Plan.

How to test without lying to yourself

Play the same attack twice: once with the specialist, once without. Finesse from the corner of the box is the cleanest A/B test. Through balls on a high line are the second. If you cannot tell the difference, you are either on Silver with low attributes, or you are using the wrong action (a power shot on a Finesse Expert).

For squad construction, pick one identity per zone rather than stacking five finishing styles and no passers. The squad building page and the tier list exist so this guide can stay a dictionary.

When you file feedback, name the PlayStyle and the action. “Shooting feels off” is noise. “Gold Power Shot still balloons from 25 meters on 110 finishing” is a report EA can replay.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers testers actually search for.

How many PlayStyles are in the Limited Beta?

The original 18 plus four extras listed above. Rankings are on the PlayStyles tier list.

Is Gold just a cosmetic upgrade?

No. Gold adds extra effects (dinked passes, stumble chance, penalty dot, safer GK deflections). Details are in each section.

Which new PlayStyle should I try first?

Incisive Through Pass on a CAM, then Slide Tackle on a CB. Both show up in ordinary matches, unlike Dead Ball which needs a foul.

Do PlayStyles work in Gauntlet?

Yes, and appearance limits mean you need duplicates of a style across XIs. See Gauntlet Mode.

Where is the official deep dive?

EA's PlayStyles article, linked from the links hub. This page translates it into tester language.
