FC Mobile Beta Formations Ranked for Game Plans
Which shapes to save in your four Game Plan slots.
Game Plans are the reason a formation list for the FC Mobile Limited Beta looks different from a live Ultimate Team list. You do not pick one shape for a season. You save up to four formation-plus-mentality pairs and switch them during a match. EA’s official Limited Beta article shows 4-4-2 in the Game Plans screenshot, and testers have been pairing it with 4-3-3 Holding, 4-2-3-1, and a five-at-the-back protect plan. This page ranks those shapes for the test window (25 August to 13 September 2026 UTC). Mechanic detail lives in the Game Plans guide. PlayStyle pairing lives on the PlayStyles tier list.
Mentalities you can attach to any saved shape: Ultra Attacking, Attacking, Balanced, Defensive, Ultra Defensive. The formation is the skeleton. The mentality is the instruction to step up or sit in. A 4-4-2 on Ultra Attacking is not the same tool as a 4-4-2 on Ultra Defensive. Rank the slot, not the drawing.
How formations are graded here
Follow the parent Tier List Hub bands, plus C:
- S — holds a primary Game Plan slot and still works when you change mentality.
- A — excellent as a chase or protect slot, or as a primary if your PlayStyles match.
- B — playable, but it asks for specific items you may not have in a Guest club.
- C — novelty. Use it to answer a House Rule, not as your only plan.
We also grade as a set of four. The best S-tier XI that cannot morph into a defensive block will leak late goals. The best 5-4-1 that cannot chase a game will stall. Build a package.
Formation table for Game Plans
| Tier | Formation | Best Game Plan job |
|---|---|---|
| S | 4-4-2 | Primary Balanced / Attacking |
| S | 4-3-3 Holding | Primary or chase |
| S | 4-2-3-1 Wide | Primary if you have a true CAM |
| A | 4-2-2-2 | Chase / two-striker overload |
| A | 4-1-2-1-2 Narrow | Central combinations |
| A | 5-4-1 Holding | Protect, Ultra Defensive |
| B | 4-3-3 Attack | Ultra Attacking chase only |
| B | 3-5-2 | Wing-back specialist |
| B | 4-5-1 | Low block without five defenders |
| C | 3-4-3 | High-risk width |
| C | 5-2-3 | Extreme park-the-bus |
4-4-2 is S because it is the official visual, because two strikers survive mentality swings, and because you can flip LMs/RMs into a compact midfield four without inventing new roles. Put Clinical Finisher and Rapid on the strikers, Anticipate on at least one centre-back, and Tiki Taka or Incisive Through Pass on a central midfielder. Balanced 4-4-2 is the default Guest plan. Attacking 4-4-2 is the same XI asked to step into the half-spaces.
4-3-3 Holding is S as a primary or as slot two. The holding midfielder gives you a Bruiser or Anticipate shield while Rapid wingers stretch the pitch. It is the cleanest way to feel the new Incisive Through Pass: one passer, two runners, one holding player who does not abandon the six. Defensive mentality on this shape is still football; Ultra Defensive is usually better on a five-back.
4-2-3-1 Wide is S if you actually have a CAM who deserves Dead Ball, Driven Lob Through, or Finesse Expert. If your CAM is a converted CM with no attacking PlayStyle, demote this to A and start 4-4-2 instead. Wide 4-2-3-1 plus Attacking mentality is the most common chase plan in tester clips: double pivot, a creator, two wide threats, one striker.
Mentalities are half the rank
Write your four slots as sentences, not as formation names.
- Balanced 4-4-2 — start here. You can play football without gambling the first twenty minutes.
- Attacking or Ultra Attacking 4-3-3 Holding / 4-2-3-1 — chase a goal. Push full-backs, ask Driven Lob Through to beat a low block.
- Defensive 4-4-2 or 4-3-3 Holding — protect a one-goal lead without changing the XI too much. Fewer substitution animations, fewer out-of-position traps.
- Ultra Defensive 5-4-1 Holding — close a match. Slide Tackle and Anticipate centre-backs, Relentless wide players, no shame.
That package uses three of the S/A names above and keeps player roles overlapping, which matters when you switch mid-match. If a striker cannot play wide and a centre-back cannot play in a back five, the animation while you rearrange is a concession waiting to happen.
Ultra Attacking is not a personality. It is a timed tool. Use it after you score first only if you want a second; use it trailing; almost never use it as the kickoff plan in Division Rivals unless you are testing a specific PlayStyle. Ultra Defensive is the same idea in reverse. The controls guide is worth a pass so you actually know the in-match shortcut for swapping Game Plans instead of pausing into a menu panic.
Gauntlet changes the formation question
Gauntlet Mode is a series of rounds. Each round has matches with objectives, Traits, and House Rules. Each player item has a limited number of appearances. You win matches and earn Stars. Full rules: Gauntlet Mode.
For Gauntlet, do not marry one S-tier shape. You will run out of the Rapid wingers that make 4-3-3 Holding sing. Keep a 4-4-2 that can absorb replacement strikers, a 4-2-3-1 that can absorb a replacement CAM, and a 5-4-1 that can absorb extra centre-backs when House Rules punish space in behind. Relentless and Accelerator items become more valuable than a single Gold Trickster because the second and third matches still need runners.
If a House Rule tightens passing lanes, 4-1-2-1-2 Narrow (A) can outplay a wide S-tier shape for that round. If a Trait nerfs skill moves, stop forcing 3-4-3. Rank the formation for the default job, then let the round veto it.
Guest squad constraints
The Limited Beta is Guest login only. No account linking. Progress does not carry over. In-game purchases are disabled. You cannot shop a perfect 4-2-3-1. If the Guest pool gives you two strikers and no CAM, 4-4-2 is not a compromise — it is the correct S pick. If the pool gives you three centre-backs and slow wingers, skip 3-4-3 and live in 5-4-1 / 4-4-2.
OVR still matters for contesting duels, but PlayStyle identity matters more for how a formation plays. A 4-3-3 without Rapid or Accelerator on the wings is a 4-5-1 in disguise. A back four without Anticipate or Slide Tackle will not hold a Defensive mentality against a Rapid pair. Build the shape around the badges you own, then look at the Players Hub when you need item context.
What not to copy from live Ultimate Team
Live clubs can force a meta shape with coins, drafts, and Rank Up Tokens. Those currencies belong to the live account — see the Rank Up guide and the codes hub — and they do not touch this Guest profile. Do not stall the beta waiting for a live-market full-back. Test the four Game Plan slots with what you were given.
Also do not assume every live formation name exists unchanged. Testers have reported familiar FC Mobile shapes (4-4-2, 4-4-2 Holding, 4-3-3 Attack / Holding, 4-2-3-1 Wide, 4-2-2-2, 4-1-2-1-2 Narrow, 5-4-1 Holding) rather than a brand-new console set. If a shape is missing in your build, skip it; do not invent slots.
A four-slot example you can steal and then break
Slot 1: Balanced 4-4-2, Clinical Finisher pair up top, Incisive Through Pass on a CM. Slot 2: Attacking 4-3-3 Holding, Rapid wingers, holding midfielder on Bruiser. Slot 3: Defensive 4-2-3-1 Wide, same defensive line, CAM drops onto Dead Ball if you win fouls. Slot 4: Ultra Defensive 5-4-1 Holding, Slide Tackle centre-back, Relentless wide midfielders.
Play ten H2H matches. If you never touch slot 4, you do not need a fifth defender in the squad and can spend that roster spot on a second Rapid item for Gauntlet. If you never touch slot 2, your wingers are ornamental and 4-4-2 should stay primary. Let usage, not vibes, edit the table. Recheck what is new if a beta patch changes mentality stepping.
The Guides Hub collects the how-to pages this list assumes you have read. Access and install questions sit on how to download and beta access. This page only answers which shapes deserve the four Game Plan slots while the test app is still in your pocket.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers testers actually search for.
Why is 4-4-2 ranked S for the Limited Beta?
EA's official Game Plans screenshot uses it, two strikers survive mentality changes, and Guest squads often have strikers before they have a true CAM. Pair it with the Game Plans guide so Balanced and Defensive versions are both saved.
How many formations should I save?
Up to four Game Plans. Typical package: one Balanced primary, one Attacking chase, one Defensive hold, one Ultra Defensive 5-4-1. Overlap player roles so mid-match switches do not leave people out of position.
Do mentalities matter more than the drawing?
They matter as much. Ultra Attacking 4-4-2 is a different tool from Ultra Defensive 4-4-2. Rank the slot (job plus mentality), not the silhouette. See the five official mentalities in the Game Plans guide.
Should Gauntlet use the same formation as H2H?
Not as a single XI. Appearance limits and House Rules force depth. Keep a 4-4-2 that accepts replacement strikers and a protect shape for ugly rounds. Rules are on Gauntlet Mode.
How do PlayStyles change a formation's rank?
A 4-3-3 without Rapid or Accelerator plays like a narrow midfield. A back four without Anticipate or Slide Tackle will not hold Defensive mentality. Check the PlayStyles tier list before you lock slot 1.
